CBDC development pushed into ‘top gear’ by Covid – policy-makers

The Covid-19 pandemic will be the ultimate accelerator towards a functioning central bank digital currency, according to current and former central bank policy-makers.

Speaking on a panel organised by the London School of Economics and Centre for Economic Policy Research on June 11, Benoît Cœuré said the pandemic will be remembered by economic historians as “the event which pushed CBDC development into top gear”.
