Two-thirds of RTGS systems now aligned with ISO 20022
Over 80% of central banks aligned with CPMI harmonised standards
The number of central banks now using the International Standards Organization (ISO) 20022 messaging service for their real-time gross settlement (RTGS) systems rose year on year, the Payments Benchmarks 2026 show.
Out of 47 central banks, 32 (68.1%) say they use ISO 20022 messaging standards for their RTGS. This year’s figure is higher than the 44.9% reported in the 2025 benchmark, likely due to central banks completing adoption ahead of the November 2025 deadline. Still, the data suggests many
