Over 70% of jurisdictions now have an instant payments system

Nearly a fifth of central banks plan to launch a system in the future

The number of jurisdictions operating instant payments systems for retail initiatives continues to grow, albeit at a slower pace year on year, according to data provided by respondents to the Payments Benchmarks 2026.

Over seven in 10 (71.7%) jurisdictions now have an instant payments system in operation. That marks a rise of around three percentage points compared with 68.8% in the 2025 benchmark and is over 10 percentage points higher than the 59% reported in the 2024 benchmark.
