Half of central banks have yet to adopt ISO 20022 in RTGS systems

Adoption rate increased sharply in 2025 with more planning to upgrade soon

Around half of central banks have not yet adopted the ISO 20022 messaging standard in their real-time gross settlement (RTGS) systems, but most will upgrade soon, data from the Payments Benchmarks 2025 shows.

Among the 49 central banks that shared data on ISO 20022 adoption, 44.9% have fully adopted the standard and 6.1% have adopted it in some systems but not all. The remaining 49% have yet to adopt the standard.
