RTGS systems process nearly 200 million payments on average
Transaction values average $11.6 trillion among respondents
Central banks executed an average of roughly 200 million transactions over real-time gross settlement (RTGS) systems in the past 12 months, the Payments Benchmarks 2026 reveal.
Transaction volumes average 198.4 million across 47 data suppliers, while the data points vary between 13,691 and 7.3 billion. This year’s transaction volume is more than triple the 54.8 million average volume reported in the 2025 benchmark. Sample participation varies, however.
