BoE considering new form of offline payments for UK

Phase two of digital pound work to start next month, as Bailey softens stance on stablecoins

Bank-of-England-Threadneedle-Street

The BoE is considering introducing a new form of offline payments to the UK, as part of its work on the digital pound, as it also grapples with privacy considerations around aliases.

“Payments are evolving towards a more diverse, multi-money landscape,” the BoE said in an update on the design phase of the central bank digital currency (CBDC) on October 23.

Though households and businesses may also in the future be able to transact with “different forms of sterling interchangeably at equal value”
