Payments units have median staffing of 30 FTE personnel
Central banks say they are boosting staff numbers to keep pace with evolving technology
Payments departments of central banks have a total median of 30 full-time equivalent (FTE) staff, data from the Payments Benchmarks 2026 reveals.
Forty-four central banks provided information on the number of FTE staff who work in payments. The data analysis shows a median staffing of 30 FTE personnel. The figure is up 46.3% from the 20.5 in a somewhat different sample in the 2025 benchmark. Payment teams range from three to 350 FTE employees for an average of 49.8 individuals.
