Most RTGS systems projected for upgrade within a year

Two in three RTGSs operating 13–16 hours daily to be upgraded within a year

Nearly three-fifths of central banks plan to upgrade their real-time gross settlement (RTGS) technology next year, the Payments Benchmarks 2025 find.

Twenty-six (56.5%) of 46 central banks say they target a period of one year for their next RTGS upgrade. Four (8.7%) respondents set a timeline of 2–3 years. Six others expect to achieve the same goal within 4–5 years, while just over a fifth (21.7%) have no plans to upgrade.
