Budget and RTGS operating expenses rise year on year

Share of central banks charging both fixed and varied fees for RTGS access grows

The average operating costs of real-time gross settlement (RTGS) systems and annual budget of most payments systems departments rose over the past year, data from the Payments Benchmarks 2025 show.

Three-quarters of respondents told Central Banking that their annual budget increased (75%) within the period. Budgets stayed the same in 14.3% of jurisdictions while a tenth experienced decrease (10.7%).
