Half of retail payment sectors saw diversification last year

Changes include regulations, technology and rate of participation

The retail payments sector in 25 jurisdictions experienced diversification over the past 12 months, data from the Payments Benchmarks 2025 shows.

Just over half (51%) of 49 central banks reported this development. Activity was broadly unchanged in 32.7% of jurisdictions, while eight central banks said their sectors consolidated (16.3%). In the 2024 benchmark, only 38.5% of participants reported diversification.
