Central banks’ payments operations staffed more than oversight function

Advanced economies tend to have higher staff numbers in both functions

Central banks’ payments department dedicate more staff to operations than oversight, according to Payments Benchmarks 2021 data. 

In advanced economies, median staff in the operations function was 10 but only six in oversight. In emerging market economies, median staff numbers were six in operations and four in oversight. 

Oversight of payments and settlement systems involves monitoring existing and planned systems for safety and efficiency and where necessary ensuring changes. Operations
