A centre-right politician has been appointed president of the National Bank of Austria’s governing council, in a move that may lead the way for the hard-right Austrian Freedom Party to appoint the next governor later this year.

The appointments of the two top jobs at Austria’s central bank – the governor and president – have historically been split between the government’s coalition parties. Austria has operated under a coalition government framework since 1945.
