Data allows “nowcasting” of inflation, paper argues

Recent low US inflation figures will “likely” be revised upwards following research into the personal consumption expenditures (PCE) chain price index, the vice-president of the Federal Reserve Bank of Dallas says.

In the bank’s latest economic letter, vice-president Evan Koenig and senior research analyst Alan Armen examine how a small set of timely inflation indicators can be combined to anticipate movements in the PCE. This can provide a means to “nowcast” inflation in real time, they say.
