Tariffs not increasing activity or jobs in US manufacturing – study

Labour supply constraints and increased input costs are holding sector back, say Fed researchers

There is no evidence that US industries with spare production capacity and import protection from this year’s tariffs are increasing activity in response to the levies, research from the Federal Reserve Board suggests.

The study, published on October 31, says labour supply constraints resulting from changes in US immigration policy are also preventing production from reaching its full capacity.
