CBDC technical design has little impact on demand – BoK study

Working paper also finds that interest-bearing retail instruments attract more interest

A central bank digital currency’s technical design has little impact on the demand for it, according to research published today (November 13) by the Bank of Korea.

The working paper estimates the demand for CBDCs as a payment method by surveying preferences based on access to hypothetical instruments with varying characteristics. These include CBDCs with online and offline functionality, those linked to apps, and those with card-based payment functionality.
