Central bank gold demand bounces back to record high

World Gold Council revision points to slowdown in central bank demand in first quarter of 2026

Central bank demand for gold sharply recovered in the second quarter after “hefty” selling at the start of the year subsided, according to the World Gold Council (WGC).

In a report published on July 30, the industry body said central banks and other institutions (such as sovereign wealth funds) bought a net 289 tonnes of gold between April and June, a record high for a second quarter and a 62% rise compared with the same period last year.

The National Bank of Poland was the largest buyer, adding
