NBFIs can boost EU’s capital markets, expert says

Sintra panellist says savings and investment union crucial to tapping non-banks’ resources

Non-bank financial institutions (NBFIs) can contribute to the development of capital markets in the European Union, according to a panellist at the European Central Bank’s annual forum.

Speaking on July 2, Loriana Pelizzon, professor of economics at Ca’ Foscari University of Venice, said that NBFIs based in the eurozone often invested in stocks and bonds abroad, and most commonly in the US.

She compared them with NBFIs in the US, which kept most of their capital inside the country.
