Central banks keep trialling link between wCBDC and RTGS
Most respondents motivated to issue wCBDC to enable financial innovation
Nearly all central banks that are working on wholesale central bank digital currency (wCBDC) are exploring links with real-time gross settlement (RTGS) systems, the Fintech Benchmarks 2026 find.
The dominant technology option being trialled for wCBDC – at all but one of 13 jurisdictions – is a “link with domestic RTGS” (92.3%). The initiative was also the top solution from a slightly different sample dissected in the 2025 benchmark. This year, interoperability with public distributed ledger
