Majority of CBDCs designed to be domestic only
But a fifth of central banks are working on multi-currency CBDCs
The vast majority of central bank digital currencies are not designed to accept CBDCs in other currencies, the Fintech Benchmarks 2026 find.
This section generated responses from 26 central banks. Four-fifths (81%) of these said their work on digital currency did not include accepting CBDCs denominated in other currencies.
However, five respondents indicated that their plans incorporate multi-currency CBDC.
