Central banks struggle to publicise new banknotes

The majority of the Dutch population do not check the authenticity of their banknotes, according to a survey commissioned by the Netherlands Bank, which fears this compounds the difficulty of communicating new security features.

The survey found that 66% of the public had not checked their banknotes on even a single occasion in the past five years and had "no intention" of changing their behaviour in the future.

The public's lack of cognisance was highlighted by a question about the watermark
