When the Sri Lankan government was hit by a $2.5 million cyber attack earlier this year, the incident led to the suspension of some senior officials of the public debt management office (PDMO), an agency operated under the supervision of the ministry of finance.

The payment was intended to cover debts to Australian creditors, but it was alleged to have been diverted off the accounts of the ministry to unknown recipients, according to a press release issued in April. Preliminary investigations
