Risk managers report increase in geopolitical and AI risks

But cyber incidents and security remain greatest risks for many central banks

Geopolitical and artificial intelligence risks increased the most over the past 12 months, the Risk Management Benchmarks 2026 find.

Central banks graded threats on a one to five scale according to the change in risk over the past year. One corresponded to “decreased significantly” and five to “increased significantly”.

Geopolitical risk has the highest average score of 4, while AI risks average 3.8. The former averaged 3.6 as the fastest-rising risk in a slightly different sample analysed in the
