Economics researchers should consider the role of accounting conventions when carrying out work on the effectiveness of bank regulations, according to a new study from the National Bureau of Economic Research.

In a working paper published this month, Nina Boyarchenko, Kinda Hachem and Anya Kleymenova explore how giving discretion to banks over financial reporting may influence the effectiveness of regulation.
