ECB posted €1.3bn loss in 2025

Reserves grew by €13.6bn while central bank thinned balance sheet by €37.3bn

The European Central Bank’s annual accounts report, published today (February 26), show that it made a €1.3 billion ($1.53 billion) loss in 2025.

This was the third consecutive year in which the ECB posted a loss and, as with its losses of €1.3 billion in 2023 and €7.94 billion in 2024, the bank said the figure was mostly attributable to its declining but still significant bond holdings. It added that, like the two previous years’ losses, 2025’s would be offset by future gains.
