Former Irish central bank governor calls for policy-makers to report portfolios at fair value

Central banks should develop a common accounting standard when it comes to evaluating how much capital they hold, Patrick Honohan has argued.

In a paper published this month, the former governor of the Central Bank of Ireland says the varying accounting conventions among monetary authorities have made it difficult to compare their equity positions.

To develop a uniform perspective, Honohan, now a fellow at the Peterson Institute for International Economics, investigates the books of more than 30
