Wholesale CBDC work remains less popular than retail

Like retail, central banks say domestic payments efficiency is key driver

Fewer than half of central banks responding to the Fintech Benchmarks 2024 are engaged in wholesale central bank digital currency (CBDC) work, compared with over 75% in retail.

The technology is being explored in 19 (48.7%) of the 39 jurisdictions that responded to the question. In the 2023 benchmark a little more than half (54%) of respondents say they have wholesale CBDC. Last year the proportion of central banks engaged in retail versus wholesale work was also around 75% versus 50%
