Extending the network of swap lines to emerging markets could help facilitate greater stability in the global financial system, the Bank for International Settlements' Luiz Awazu Pereira da Silva said in a recent speech.

Da Silva cited research suggesting advanced economies' central banks should consider extending swap lines to "systemic" emerging market economies, which could smooth volatility in markets caused by excessive liquidity from unconventional policies. It might also yield better
