National Bank of Belgium governor says invective is crowding out rational discourse
The governor of the National Bank of Belgium (NBB) has argued that central banks’ independence increasingly hinges on liberal democracy’s resilience.
In an interview published in the Brussels Times on September 22, Pierre Wunsch said institutional independence had its roots in rational discourse. However, increased attacks on “objective” knowledge and intellectual effort were threatening institutional independence, including that of central banks.
