Lagarde and Nagel make renewed calls for European unity

ECB and Bundesbank presidents say continent risks losing ground without further markets integration

The presidents of the European Central Bank and the Deutsche Bundesbank have urged Europe to pursue greater integration in a bid to reclaim control over the continent’s future.

Speaking at an official dinner at the Bundesbank in Berlin on September 9, Christine Lagarde and Joachim Nagel said market fragmentation and national barriers remained the principal roadblocks to a more powerful Europe. “Europe is large on paper”, Nagel said. “It must become large in practice.”
