BoT proposes agency to oversee gold trade amid baht appreciation

Economist says greater oversight would slow dollar-baht trade, but underlying issues may persist

The governor of Thailand’s central bank has proposed that a dedicated agency be set up to monitor the gold trade in the country, amid an appreciation of the baht that he partly attributes to increased sales of the precious metal.
