BoT seeks more oversight of gold trade to prevent baht volatility

Vitai says bank is working to boost supervision of institutions and dealers involved in precious metal

Thailand’s central bank wants more information on the country’s gold trade to prevent continued baht volatility, its governor has said.

Speaking on September 22, Vitai Ratanakorn said the Bank of Thailand (BoT) was working to address “various structural issues” that were of concern to the public, in addition to pursuing its mandate of ensuring stability. He added that the bank lacked sufficient data to monitor the impact of gold transactions, particularly on the exchange rate.

The governor said
