China’s policies reduce risk of ‘Japanification’ – study

Bank of Spain research compares country’s economic challenges with its Pacific neighbour’s in 1990s

Chinese policy-makers are aware of the dangers of “Japanification” and appear determined to avoid it, according to a new study from the Bank of Spain.

The research, published on July 22, compares China’s current situation with that of Japan between 1990 and 2020. During this period, Japan experienced low or even negative inflation, ultra-loose monetary policy and “deteriorating demographic trends”.

The author – the Bank of Spain’s head of international financial analysis, Adrian van Rixtel – says
