
Spain imposes capital buffers on Norway-exposed bank
Santander’s exposure to Norwegian market is above exemption threshold

The Bank of Spain has imposed a 4.5% systemic risk buffer (SyRB) on Santander’s Norwegian exposures.
In a statement on May 8, the central bank explained that the lender’s exposure to Norway exceeded Nkr5 billion ($482.4 million). This meant Santander was not exempt from the recommendation by the European Systemic Risk Board (ESRB) that the Bank of Spain should impose on the lender a buffer identical to that imposed by Norway’s prudential authority.
