“Growing size and complexity” of the banking sector demands stronger governance, paper says

The Reserve Bank of India is preparing to take a tougher line on bank governance, as the “growing size and complexity” of the sector demands higher standards, a discussion paper says.

Recent “governance failures” have highlighted the “impact of quality of governance on efficiency in allocation of resources”, the paper says. While it does not mention specific examples, several Indian banks have run into trouble in recent years.
