ECB’s Cœuré: European Fiscal Board can play key role

Independent fiscal institutions can be ‘decisive’ in European convergence, senior ECB member says

Independent fiscal institutions can make "decisive contributions" towards economic convergence in the EU, Benoît Cœuré said today (January 27), in Frankfurt.

EU legislation required eurozone member countries to create independent bodies, such as fiscal councils, to monitor state compliance with the eurozone's fiscal rules, the European Central Bank executive board member said.

To function effectively, Cœuré said, fiscal councils would need to be institutionally independent of other government
