Democratic Republic of Congo fights dollarisation


New banknotes of higher denominations than have previously been available have been introduced in the Democratic Republic of Congo in an attempt to stem the dollarisation of the economy.

The first batch of the notes was released on July 2 following a lengthy consultation period. Speaking in June, the governor of the Central Bank of the Democratic Republic of Congo, Jean-Claude Masangu Mulongo, said research into the project began in 2002.
