Tanigaki says Japan could increase gold holdings

Japan's Finance Minister Sadakazu Tanigaki said in response to a parliamentary question that Japan may consider switching part of its massive reserves into gold to bring them more into line with levels elsewhere.

Analysts were quoted as describing the possible move as the biggest story in the official sector gold for years but others speculated that Mr Tanigaki's statement may simply have been an 'off-the-cuff' remark

Tanigaki is likely to come under strong pressure to clarify Japan's intenti
