Should reserve management be farmed out?

In autumn 2005, Central Banking Publications carried out a survey of reserve managers in central banks. One question asked about their experience with outsourcing reserve management functions to external fund managers, specifically whether they outsource any portfolio management at present or whether they have done so in the past. Replies showed that a considerable number of central banks make extensive use of external managers. This question generated more comment from the respondents than any
