Assaults on independence

Today there is much research and advice on central bank independence vis-a-vis other institutions of the state, including finance ministries, treasuries, various government departments and individual politicians. Yet despite the focus on "frameworks" and "best practices" as the prescribed route to attaining central bank independence, in many countries it often comes down to force of personality or political will.

In reality central bankers across the world are regularly subject to fierce attacks
