Number of dedicated strategic planning units rises

Larger central banks more likely to have dedicated units

The proportion of central banks operating a dedicated strategic planning department increased year on year by 16%, the Strategic Planning Benchmarks 2026 find. 

Out of 44 respondents, 37 reported having a dedicated strategic planning unit (84.1%). The 2025 benchmark reported 72.5% dedicated strategic planning departments among a slightly varied sample of respondents. This year, only seven benchmark respondents say the function is “performed by other business areas” (15.9%).
