European governors serve longest average term length

Central bank governors rarely appointed for one term or 3+ terms

Central bank governors in Europe tend to hold office beyond the global average term length, the Governance Benchmarks 2026 find. 

Governors serve an average of 5.5. years in office across 62 central banks. The length of service ranges from two years to eight years. The data is consistent with the figures published in the slightly varied sample for the 2025 benchmarks. 

However, by region, governors’ office term length averages the longest among 25 respondents from Europe (6 years). Service terms
