Independence lower where central banks face legal issues

Financial independence a bigger problem where central banks say law is inappropriately worded

Central banks report lower scores for independence – especially financial independence – where they also face problems with their governing legislation, benchmarking data shows.

The Governance Benchmarks 2026 show nearly one in five respondents (18.8%) view their jurisdiction’s central bank law as inappropriate in “scope or wording”.
