Political conflict triggers decline in investment – study

Bank of Spain paper examines impact of polarisation and gridlock on major economies

Rising political conflict has been followed by a fall in investment across seven advanced economies, according to a new study by the Bank of Spain.

In their paper, published on October 7, the authors – Marina Diakonova, Julia Estefania-Flores, Corinna Ghirelli, Ana Peñalosa, Javier Pérez and Aitana Simó – use national newspaper coverage of ideological division and legislative deadlock to build separate indexes of each.
