BoE’s leverage ratio rejig to hit HSBC and StanChart

Proposed changes aim to rebalance scales in favour of domestic lending

HSBC and Standard Chartered face a small bump in their capital requirements from proposed changes to the UK’s leverage ratio, while other UK lenders would see a reduction.

The new rules, unveiled by the Bank of England’s Financial Policy Committee (FPC) on July 7, favour domestic activity over international operations.

“It is more likely that the international banks would end up with the higher requirement than the others,” says a regulatory expert at a UK bank.
