Swiss price controls do not depress inflation – SNB paper

CPI metric would ‘not have greatly differed’ had it excluded price-controlled goods, study finds

Swiss National Bank (SNB)
Jennifer Delaney

The unusually high share of price-controlled goods in Switzerland’s consumer price index (CPI) basket does not affect the country’s inflation figures to any significant extent, according to research from the Swiss National Bank (SNB).

The paper, published on October 27, examines CPI inflation data since 2007. It finds that even if the 25% of items in the basket whose prices are set by some authority were to be excluded, this would not result in a significantly higher CPI measure.
