Viet Nam sees increased used of non-cash payments

Non-cash payments have become more popular in Viet Nam, accounting for 79 per cent of all payments at banks in the first six months of the year as against 77 percent in 2003, according to VNA.

Deputy Director of the State Bank of Viet Nam (SBV)'s Department for Monetary Policies Vu Danh Trong was quoted as saying non-cash payments help individuals and businesses save time and money. The project on inter-bank electronic payment has been paying off, helping speed up capital circulation.

According to the SBV, currently 1 million bank accounts worth 10,000 billion VND (645 million USD) have been opened.

In Ho Chi Minh City, about 40,000 bank accounts worth 170 billion VND have been opened at bank branches in the export processing and industrial zones and 36,000 ATM cards have been issued by those bank offices, VNA said. Ninety-seven businesses in these areas are using banking services to make wage payments for their workers.
