The National Bank of Georgia will launch a lari stablecoin, to be called gelt, with Tether, according to a press release by the world’s largest stablecoin issuer on May 25.

“This marks one of the first joint efforts to place a national currency directly onto digital asset rails under a purpose-built stablecoin regulatory framework,” Tether said. The company added that the “launch comes as governments and central banks globally begin confronting a structural shift in how money moves”.
