Zeti stresses need to protect independence when central banks get broad mandates

Most emerging economy central banks have a role to play in the development of the financial system, and it is crucial to protect their integrity and independence, Bank Negara Malaysia governor Zeti Akhtar Aziz argued today (March 14).

Her comments in Sasana Kijang follow a speech in February during which she called for "careful boundary management" when central banks take on broader mandates involving inclusion, safety nets and environmental sustainability.

Fleshing out those remarks, Zeti noted
