RBNZ governor says operational independence is crucial

Hawkesby says central bankers globally are worried attacks on independence will be normalised

The acting governor of the Reserve Bank of New Zealand (RBNZ) has said that maintaining operational independence is crucial for monetary authorities across the world.

“Ten years ago, it would be unheard of for a US president to openly disagree with interest rate policy or call the US Federal Reserve chairman a string of names and insults,” Christian Hawkesby said in a speech on October 29. However, such incidents had now become commonplace, and the global central banking community was worried
