Do not loosen capital rules, ECB tells national authorities

Central bank says there are no signs that requirements are constraining credit supply in eurozone

The European Central Bank has said it does not want to see banks’ capital rules loosened.

In a statement on July 7, the bank told national authorities within the eurozone to “maintain the current resilience of the banking system”. It said this was necessary because of the sharp rise in global geopolitical uncertainty, which had reached a 35-year high and coincided with a weak growth outlook in the Eurosystem.
